Custom Curtain Measurement Guide

Because True Elegance Begins with Perfect Proportions

Every Italian Royals curtain is tailored exclusively for your space — precision in measurement ensures the perfect fall, proportion, and grace your interiors deserve. Please follow the guide below carefully before submitting your order.

Before You Begin

You’ll Need:

  • A steel measuring tape (avoid using a fabric tape as it is not straight and can give incorrect measurements, if it is not held firm and straight)
  • A step ladder (for ceiling or high mount)
  • A notepad to record measurements in centimeters or inches
  • Someone to assist you — accurate measuring is easier with two people

Important:

  • Always measure each window or door individually — even if they appear identical.
Tiny differences can affect how your curtains fit and fall.
  • Curtain Label – In the ordering options we provide an option called “Curtain Label”. Here you can enter the name of each door or window (for example: Living Room Window 01), so that you know which door / window the measurements belong to. During shipping, we will put these labels on each curtain so that it is very easy for you to install the right curtain at the right door / window.

Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Style

Curtains can be installed in two primary ways:

  1. Wall Mount

The curtain rod or track is fixed to the wall above the window frame.
Ideal for standard windows or where there’s enough wall space above the frame.

  1. Ceiling Mount (Full Height or Floor-to-Ceiling Look)

The curtain track is attached directly to the ceiling, creating a dramatic, elongated look — perfect for luxury interiors, tall windows, or modern minimal spaces.

Step 2: Measuring Curtain Width

Your curtain width depends on the total width of your curtain rod or track, not just the window frame.

  1. For a Rod or Track Already Installed:
    • Measure the full length of the rod or track (not including finials).
    • Add extra width (10–15 cm / 4–6 inches) on each side of the window frame to allow the curtains to open fully and frame the view beautifully.
  2. If You Haven’t Installed a Rod or Track Yet:
    • Measure the window frame width.
    • Add at least 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) in total (10–15 cm each side).
    • This ensures your curtains cover the window completely and enhance the sense of space.

Tip:

  • For a truly luxurious, full look, Italian Royals will create a curtain that is 8x to 2.2x of the track width for fabric fullness. This means that the width of the curtains that we will provide will be about twice the track width.
  • Please do not send us the width of the curtain fabric. If you simply send us the width of the track or rod then we will design the curtains to be about twice the given width.

Step 3: Measuring Curtain Height (Drop)

The curtain height depends on where you want your curtain to start and where it should end.

  1. For Wall-Mounted Curtains:
  • Start: Measure from the top of the rod or track to where you want the curtain to end.
  • End: Curtains typically finish:
    • 1 cm (½ inch) above the floor for a neat, modern look
    • Touching the floor for a soft, classic drape
    • Pooling on the floor (5–10 cm) for an opulent, romantic look
  1. For Ceiling-Mounted Curtains (Floor-to-Ceiling Style):
  • Start: Measure from the ceiling (or the underside of the ceiling track) down to the floor.
  • End: Decide if you want them:
    • To just kiss the floor (precise and tailored)
    • Or to pool slightly (adds grandeur and softness)

Tip:

  • Always measure from multiple points (left, middle, right) — floors and ceilings aren’t always perfectly level.
  • Record the shortest measurement if you want the curtains to “just touch” the floor, or the longest if you prefer pooling.

Step 4: Measuring for Doors or Patio Windows

  • Measure from the top of the track/rod (or where you’ll mount it) down to 1 cm above the floor for smooth operation.
  • If you have sliding doors, ensure the curtain length doesn’t drag or obstruct the movement.

Additional Tips for a Perfect Fit

  • Curtain Heading Style Matters:
Eyelet, pleated, or ripple-fold headings may require extra length above the track. Always check the product’s measuring notes.
  • Track vs. Rod Mount:
If using a rod, measure from the bottom of the rings (where the curtain hooks attach).
If using a track, measure from the top of the track to the floor.

Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

To help you achieve a flawless fit, please avoid these frequent errors:

  1. ❌ Measuring only the window frame, not the rod/track width.
  2. ❌ Forgetting to add allowance above and around the frame for a fuller, elegant look.
  3. ❌ Measuring from the wrong starting point (top of window instead of top of track).
  4. ❌ Using different units (mixing inches and centimeters).
  5. ❌ Forgetting to measure each window individually — even identical ones may differ slightly.
  6. ❌ Not accounting for uneven floors or ceilings — always check the height at three points.
  7. ❌ Measuring when carpet or flooring hasn’t been installed yet (can alter final height).
  8. ❌ Forgetting to mention mount type (ceiling vs. wall) when submitting measurements.

Final Checklist Before Submitting

  • Confirm if your curtain will be wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted.
  • Double-check that width and height are written in the correct units.
  • Indicate whether you’d like your curtains to touch or pool on the floor.
  • Ensure measurements are recorded clearly for each window/door.
